Few places in American sport carry as much age as the Saratoga race track, which opened in 1863 and remains the oldest operating track in the United States. This glass negative, made by the Detroit Publishing Company sometime between 1900 and 1915, captures the track in the years when the company was photographing resorts and scenic sites across the country for postcards and travel books. Saratoga Springs had long drawn wealthy visitors to its mineral waters, and the racing season turned the town into a summer social hub. The negative's 8 by 10 inch format gives the scene a sharp, detailed quality that rewards close looking.
