Yaddo, the estate that Spencer Trask, a New York banker and financier, and his wife Katrina built on the outskirts of Saratoga Springs, sits behind its formal grounds in this view. Trask died in 1909, and Katrina Trask later turned the property into an artists' retreat, a use that continues today. The picture is a glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, which made many views of American towns, resorts and country houses around 1900 to 1910. It shows how a wealthy family's summer and country seat looked just before its later life as a place for writers and artists began.
