Dr. Strong's Sanitarium in Saratoga Springs, New York, was one of the many health resorts that drew visitors to the town during the decades when its mineral springs were promoted as a cure for ailments ranging from indigestion to nervous exhaustion. Saratoga's reputation as a spa dates to the late 1700s, and by the early 1900s its hotels and bathhouses formed a busy resort economy. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American towns, hotels and scenic places for color-tinted postcards and promotional views. The image gives a record of how a private sanitarium presented itself to the public in that era.
