A formal Italian garden in Canfield (Congress Spring) Park sets this view apart from the other Saratoga scenes on the board. The park grew up around the mineral springs that drew visitors to Saratoga Springs in the nineteenth century, when the town was a fashionable summer destination for travelers seeking cures and society. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative around 1904, documented American resorts and scenic places for travel promotion. Its record of the garden shows how carefully resort landscapes were designed to be admired.
