Hathorn Spring in Saratoga Springs, New York, is the subject here, and the picture turns toward the pavilion built over the mineral water rather than the landscape around it. Hathorn was one of the many mineral springs that gave the town its reputation as a resort from the early 1800s onward, when visitors came to drink the carbonated water for their health. The photograph was made around 1904 by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American resorts, towns and scenery on large glass negatives like this 8 x 10 example. Its interior view shows how these bathing and drinking houses were furnished for the crowds who visited them.
