Few posters from the First World War carry a title as informal as this one. "Journée du Poilu," or Poilu Day, takes its name from the affectionate nickname French infantrymen gave themselves, roughly "the hairy one." Held on December 25 and 26, 1915, and organized under the auspices of the French parliament, the event aimed to raise support for the soldiers at the front. The lithograph is signed by Adolphe Willette, a Montmartre illustrator known for sentimental and satirical drawings, and its embrace between a soldier and a woman presents home and sweetheart as the cause worth backing.
