A nurse and young children share the foreground of this 1917 French lithograph, which urges parents to have their children vaccinated with the B.C.G. vaccine against tuberculosis. Albert Calmette and Camille Guérin were developing the vaccine in France during the First World War, when tuberculosis threatened civilian and military health alike. The poster is signed by Vilà, and its pairing of a caregiver with children presents vaccination as a protective, almost maternal act.
