Its French title, *Un grand fléau la tuberculose*, which translates as "Tuberculosis, a great plague," sets the warning before the image is even read. Signed by F. Galais and dated 1917, this large color lithograph, about 159 by 121 centimeters, was made as a public health poster. Tuberculosis was a leading cause of death in France around the First World War, when wartime hardship, crowded housing and poor nutrition helped the disease spread. The catalog subjects point to sick people and death, so the image likely relies on those figures to drive its message home.
