Here the disease itself becomes a snake, and the French title urges viewers to conquer tuberculosis as one would the most wretched of reptiles. Issued in 1918, the poster belongs to the anti-tuberculosis campaigns France stepped up during the First World War, when the illness took a heavy toll on civilians and soldiers alike. Signed by Géo Dorival with G. Capon credited as a collaborator, the two-color lithograph pairs a hand with a serpent to recast a slow, invisible illness as a single enemy that can be grasped and crushed.
