A French health inspector is the central figure in this 1917 color lithograph, which promises to lead viewers toward health through a crusade against tuberculosis and infant mortality. Auguste Leroux designed it for the American Commission for the Prevention of Tuberculosis in France, an American effort to support civilian health work during the First World War. The war strained French households and hospitals, and tuberculosis and infant deaths were serious concerns of the period. The closing appeal, "Soutenez-la!" (Support her!), asked the public to back the women doing health work on the home front.
