Wagons stretch back six blocks in this scene, all waiting their turn at one of the largest coal yards in Chicago. Coal was the main fuel for heating homes and running factories in the city at the time, so a line this long shows how much daily life depended on a steady supply moved by wagon from rail yards to back doors and cellars. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that documented American life in the early twentieth century, made the picture between 1909 and 1932, when motor trucks were beginning to share city streets with horses. The queue is a useful record of the crowding and slow pace of urban freight before trucks took over.
