A sailor from the protected cruiser *Chicago* poses beside the ship's artillery, a reminder of how closely a turn-of-the-century crewman's working life was tied to his guns. *Chicago* was one of the steel cruisers the United States built in the 1880s to replace its aging wooden fleet, and she was commissioned in 1889. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its photographs of American places and people, made this view as a glass-plate negative. The company's catalog dates the image to around 1901, so the picture captures the ship and its men in the years just after the new navy took shape.
