Taken as the U.S.S. Chicago was going into commission on December 1, 1898, this 8 by 10 inch glass negative shows a cruiser at a point of transition. The ship had first been commissioned in 1889 and was remodeled between 1895 and 1898, so the picture marks its return to service after a major refit. Cruisers of this era were central to the expanding American navy, and the Detroit Publishing Company, which made the negative, photographed ships, cities and landscapes across the country. The numbers and the name "Hart" inscribed on the glass hint at how the plate was logged and handled.
