Two admirals, Winfield Scott Schley and John W. Philip, are shown heading below deck aboard the cruiser U.S.S. Chicago in 1899. Both had gained wide public attention during the Spanish-American War of 1898, when Schley commanded the naval forces at Santiago de Cuba and Philip captained the battleship Texas there. Chicago was one of the steel cruisers of the modern U.S. Navy that were built in the 1880s and 1890s, and the picture offers a rare record of senior officers moving through a warship's interior. The glass negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format views documented American places and people around the turn of the century.
