Admiral Winfield Scott Schley is shown boarding the protected cruiser U.S.S. Chicago, a ship that had entered service with the new steel navy of the late 1880s. Schley had gained national fame as a commander in the Spanish-American War, especially at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in 1898, and his stature was still high when this was taken in 1899. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its large-format views of American places and people, made the glass negative. Its ceremonial moment captures how the Navy presented its senior officers in the years after the war.
