The picture shows the cruiser U.S.S. Chicago, with Rear Admiral Winfield Scott Schley meeting her officers aboard ship. Schley was a prominent U.S. Navy commander, best known for his role in the 1898 naval battle off Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed American towns, landscapes and ships around the turn of the century, made the image on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative. Its date of 1899 places it in the years when the United States Navy was expanding its fleet and its officers were gaining public fame.
