Few warships in the Detroit Publishing Company's files were as tied to America's naval rebuilding as the cruiser *Chicago*, shown here after her remodeling. Launched in the late 1880s as one of the steel cruisers the Navy began building after decades of relying on wooden hulls, she helped establish the United States as a modern naval power. The company, which listed this view in its 1901 catalog, traveled widely to photograph ships and cities for sale to the public. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative captures the ship's refitted profile in fine detail.
