Lake Shore Drive, the lakefront boulevard running along Lake Michigan, is the particular subject here, captured on a large 8 x 10 inch glass negative dated November 22, 1905. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made tens of thousands of views of American cities, towns and scenery in the early twentieth century, produced this image, and the glass plate survives in the Library of Congress's collection. The drive was a showpiece of the city's parks and lakefront improvements, where residents went to see the water and the skyline. Plates like this one, which came to the Library through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado, give a clear record of how Chicago presented its shoreline a century ago.
