Few homes in Chicago were as lavish as the one Mrs. Potter Palmer kept on Lake Shore Drive, and this 1909 stereograph shows it as a card made for viewing through a stereo viewer. The house belonged to Bertha Honoré Palmer, wife of Potter Palmer, the merchant and hotelier whose Palmer House was a downtown landmark. Built on the lakefront in the 1880s, it stood among the grandest residences along the city's Gold Coast, and Bertha Palmer became a prominent figure in Chicago's civic and social life. Cards like this one were a popular way for households to look at notable buildings they might never visit.
