The Kaiserpalast, or Imperial Palace, belongs to a period when Alsace-Lorraine was German territory, a status it held from the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871 until 1918. Built in Strasbourg in the 1880s as a residence for the German emperor, the palace stands near a theater and the city's Gothic cathedral, so the view pairs imperial authority with civic and religious life. This photochrom print comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose process applied layers of color to a photographic base, giving the scene the soft, saturated tones typical of 1890s views of Germany.
