Few theaters are as closely tied to one composer as the Festspielhaus on the hill above Bayreuth, which Richard Wagner designed to stage his own operas. It opened in 1876 with the first complete performance of his Ring cycle, and its sunken orchestra pit and steeply raked seating were meant to keep the audience's attention on the stage. This photochrome print, made in the 1890s, shows the building in soft color, a process popular for travel views of German towns and landmarks at the time.
