Cologne's 1914 Werkbund Exhibition was the setting for this theater, which Belgian architect Henry van de Velde designed as one of the show's most visible buildings. Van de Velde was a leading figure in the German Werkbund, the association that promoted good design and closer ties between craft and industry. The exhibition opened only months before the First World War disrupted European life, so the theater represents a moment when modern design was on display just before the continent changed. Photographs like this one preserve the exterior of a building that was never meant to be permanent.
