The view is taken from the stage of a theater that Belgian-born designer Henry van de Velde created for the 1914 Deutscher Werkbund exhibition in Cologne, so the building was meant to showcase modern German design rather than serve as a permanent playhouse. Van de Velde, a leading figure in Art Nouveau who later shaped the Weimar school of applied arts, carried his interest in unified interiors into the auditorium, where the seating, walls, and lighting work together as one composition. The exhibition opened that spring, and the outbreak of war that August cut short its ambitions. The photograph preserves the hall as it looked during that brief moment of optimism.
