The screen is blank, and the rows of seats stretch toward it under what looks like an ornate, decorative ceiling. Empty movie houses like this one were common in the early twentieth century, when picture palaces were built to make a night at the pictures feel like an occasion, with plaster ornament, gilded details and large auditoriums. An image of a theater waiting between shows captures the quiet side of the moviegoing experience, when the lights are down but nothing has yet appeared on the screen.
