Registered for copyright on November 13, 1899, this photograph shows the inside of a clubhouse at Coney Island, the seaside amusement district on the Atlantic shore of Brooklyn. It was made by the American Mutoscope & Biograph Company, which produced short films viewed through the peep-box machines called mutoscopes and, later, projected on screens. Like many of the company's late-1890s images, it was registered as a photographic print, a common way to protect and document early film-related work. The catalog also lists motion picture cameras among its subjects, which points to the company's filmmaking equipment and the period's fascination with the new medium.
