A man holding flowers, a woman on a staircase, and an owl are rendered here as flat black shapes, so the figures read as outlines rather than portraits. Silhouettes were a popular device in the late 1800s, appearing in shadow theater, magic lantern slides, and paper cutouts, and the same bold, high-contrast look suited the early projected images that Thomas Edison's company was producing around the turn of the twentieth century. The board places the picture within Edison's broader work in inventions and science, where new ways of capturing and projecting moving images were being tested. It is worth noticing how much narrative a few dark shapes can carry.
