Small figures clustered around a sleeping man set this still apart from the many Edison pictures of ordinary street scenes and workers. Visual play like this, with staged scale and a dreaming figure, was one way early filmmakers explored what the new medium could do beyond recording events. The Edison Manufacturing Company, whose studio in West Orange, New Jersey, produced many short films around 1900, promoted its work with stills like this one. The trick of scale depended on careful sets and camera placement rather than the digital tools we take for granted now.
