Charlie Chaplin's Tramp character, in his familiar bowler hat, clutches a flower in this still from City Lights, the 1931 silent comedy he wrote, directed, scored and starred in. The bloom is no accident of props: it belongs to the film's central romance, in which the Tramp woos a blind flower seller, and the gesture of offering a blossom becomes a quiet emblem of tenderness. Chaplin made City Lights in the sound era, when most studios had moved to talkies, and he chose to keep the picture silent, relying on pantomime and music to carry its emotion. Notice how much of the story lives in small physical details like this one.
