Chaplin is shown full length, stretched out asleep on a set of stairs, a pose taken from *City Lights*, the 1931 comedy he wrote, directed, and starred in as the Tramp. He made the film as a silent picture with a score he composed himself, at a time when most Hollywood studios had already moved to sound. This print is a 1964 copy of a 1931 photograph, and it belongs to the New York World-Telegram and Sun newspaper collection, which preserved many production and publicity images from the period.
