Mary Pickford, the Toronto-born actress who became one of the most famous faces of the silent era, is shown here in a full-length pose turned to the left, a format that let studio portraits display costume and bearing as well as face. Dated to about 1915, the print comes from the years when Pickford was rising fast at the Biograph and then Famous Players studios, building the screen persona of the spirited young heroine that earned her the nickname "America's Sweetheart." The notation of a U.S. Copyright Office registration shows that publicity stills like this were often filed for copyright protection, which helps explain why such portraits survive in large numbers today.
