Shot head-and-shoulders and facing front, this portrait of Mary Pickford dates from the years she was building the public image that made her famous. The credit line names Moody of New York, a commercial studio that sold portraits of stage and screen performers to newspapers and fans. Pickford, born in Toronto in 1892, had worked on stage from childhood before she began making short films at Biograph around 1909 and became one of the most recognizable faces in American cinema. A tightly framed, frontal view like this one puts the emphasis on the expression audiences came to know from her films.
