Few pictures from the silent era capture the easy camaraderie of its biggest stars as plainly as this one, which shows Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford perched on the shoulders of Douglas Fairbanks. Circa 1915 was the years when all three were rising to enormous fame in American film, and Pickford and Fairbanks would later become the couple at the center of Hollywood's first royal-style celebrity. The print appears in Booton Herndon's book on Pickford and Fairbanks, which helps explain why it has been reproduced so often as a snapshot of the period's movie colony at play.
