In this 1928 New York World-Telegram portrait, Charlie Chaplin appears in performance as the Tramp, the character who anchors *The Circus*. The film, released by United Artists that year, follows the Tramp as he stumbles into a traveling circus, becomes a sensation as a clown, and gets tangled in the troupe's romance and rivalries. The production was long and difficult, and Chaplin's work on it earned him a special honorary Academy Award at the first Oscar ceremony in 1929. The photograph is part of the newspaper's large collection of celebrity and film images, a reminder of how closely the press followed Chaplin's career.
