Chaplin's tramp character is shown here with a violin, the instrument that anchors the story of *The Vagabond*, a 1916 Mutual release that is one of the more musical of his short comedies. The poster, printed in color by the Greenwich Lithographing Company of New York in 1916, is part of the Mutual Chaplin Specials series, which advertised his films to theater owners and audiences during the peak of his fame. Laundry also appears among the listed subjects, a reminder of the everyday, working-class settings Chaplin's tramp so often drifted through. Chromolithographs like this one were built from many separate stone or plate impressions, so they carry the bright, flat color typical of American film advertising in the 1910s.
