This still comes from *Cupid's Pranks*, a short film from the Edison Manufacturing Company, and the first scene of that production is captured here. The record dates it to about 1908, a period when American studios were turning out brief comic and romantic stories that often drew on familiar figures from mythology. Cupid, the Roman god of love, was a natural choice for a tale about courtship, which the catalog tracings also name as a theme. Edison's company was among the largest film producers of the era, and its early stills and paper prints offer a useful look at how silent-era storytelling was staged.
