Furnished for members' leisure rather than the rides and crowds of the boardwalk, this view of a Coney Island club house offers a quieter side of the Brooklyn resort in 1899. The print comes from the American Mutoscope & Biograph Company, which then made short films for its peep-show viewing machines, and it carries the company's "No. 3" marking along with a 1899 copyright entry. Biograph often registered its work with the Copyright Office as paper prints, so the image also shows how early film makers protected their output. Worth noticing is the plain, domestic character of the room, which gives a glimpse of everyday social life at a place better known for spectacle.
