Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford, two of the biggest stars of the silent era, are the pair named in this photograph, which was taken at the studio they built together in Hollywood. The Pickford-Fairbanks Studios opened on Santa Monica Boulevard around 1919 and became a symbol of how the film business was shifting from New York and New Jersey to Southern California. Pickford and Fairbanks were both founding partners of United Artists, formed in 1919, which gave actors a measure of control over their own pictures. The print comes from the Library of Congress and dates from roughly the 1910s, a decade when the movie industry was growing fast.
