The Black Pirate, a 1926 swashbuckler starring Douglas Fairbanks, is one of the early feature films to use two-color Technicolor, so its sea scenes and sails appeared in color when most movies were still black and white. Fairbanks performed many of his own stunts, including sword fights and climbs through ship rigging, a physical style that made him one of the biggest stars of the 1920s. This lithograph uses a bold palette to sell that spectacle to passersby, promoting the film through its adventure and its novelty.
