The Black Maria was the first dedicated film studio, built in 1893 at Thomas Edison's laboratory complex in West Orange, New Jersey. Its tarpaper-covered walls and roof were designed to block outside light, and the whole building rotated on a pivot so that its open side could follow the sun through a slot in the roof. Inside, performers were filmed against a dark backdrop for the Kinetoscope, the peephole viewer that showed short films to one person at a time. This model shows how the small structure was laid out and helps explain how early motion pictures were made before cameras could travel to the action.
