Rather than a finished scene, this print captures the behind-the-scenes labor of setting up a movie shot, with a camera and a microphone being wheeled into place. Black Star, the New York photo agency that produced it, was known for candid documentary pictures published in magazines during the 1930s and 1940s. The series title, Portrait of America, suggests the photographers were recording American industries at work, and the likely date of 1943 places the picture in the busy wartime years of Hollywood production.
