Published as a two-page color spread in *Puck* on September 26, 1914, Hy Mayer's cartoon *In the Movies* is catalogued under both the film industry and its audiences, which sets it apart from the many images of the period that focus only on the screen. Mayer, a German-born American illustrator, drew for several humor magazines and was one of many cartoonists who found material in the new nickelodeons and picture palaces. By 1914 moving pictures had grown from a novelty of the 1890s into a mass entertainment with large, regular crowds. The print offers a glimpse of how a satirical weekly viewed the moviegoing public of that moment.
