Frederic P. Ott is caught mid-sneeze in this print, one frame from a short motion study made at Thomas Edison's laboratory in New Jersey. W.K.L. Dickson, who led much of the Kinetoscope work, filmed the sequence in early January 1894 inside the Black Maria, Edison's black studio built to record performers against a dark backdrop. The five-second film was made largely for publicity, and its frames were reproduced as still pictures to accompany an article in Harper's Weekly. The print shows how the studio treated ordinary movement as a subject in its own right, well before projected motion pictures became common.
