Annie W. Brigman made this allegorical print around 1908, and it is also known as *The Spirit of Photography*, a title that points to its subject. The round 18-centimeter silver print was registered for copyright in October 1908, a step that documented the work as a finished artistic statement. Brigman, a California pictorialist, was a member of the Photo-Secession circle led by Alfred Stieglitz, and her staged figures in natural settings were meant to express ideas rather than record events. The title "Kodak," which names a camera brand, places the picture at a moment when amateur photography was becoming widespread.
