A traveling showman setting up his peepshow among the soldiers' tents gives this pencil drawing its particular interest. Dated February 11, 1864, it shows the Culpeper, Virginia, area during the winter after the Union Army of the Potomac had camped there. Peepshow operators moved from camp to camp, charging soldiers a few cents to look through a box at painted views, offering a cheap break from drill and boredom. The artist signed only "E.F.," so the maker is unidentified, but the sketch preserves an everyday scene of camp life. It was a gift of J.P. Morgan in 1919 and belongs to the Library of Congress's Civil War drawing collection.
