Stieglitz made this picture in 1907 on the deck of an ocean liner, looking down on the passengers crowded into the steerage section below, with the ship's upper deck and rigging cutting across the frame. The angled lines of the railings and the massed figures of the third-class travelers, many in caps and dark clothing, make a near-abstract design out of an ordinary scene of immigration. Stieglitz, a leading champion of photography as fine art, later regarded the image as an important step in his move away from pictorial softness toward a sharper, more modern way of seeing. This photogravure reproduction shows the tonal richness the process was prized for.
