Muybridge's own apparatus is the subject here: a view of the camera and the electro-shutter that tripped it, shown as an illustration for the 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*. The series behind the book was made at Leland Stanford's Palo Alto property in 1878 and 1879, where a row of cameras was triggered by threads stretched across the track as horses ran past. Muybridge's electrically released shutters were what let him freeze motion in fractions of a second, and this print documents the mechanism that made the sequences possible. Its albumen process was the standard printing method of the period.
