This plate is a working diagram rather than a photograph of the horses, showing how the electro-shutters were arranged in front of the camera lens and where each panel sat before, during, and after an exposure. Edward Muybridge built the device for his motion studies at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, when he was recording a running horse for Leland Stanford. A horse breaking a thread stretched across the track released the shutters, letting the lens capture an instant of movement in a fraction of a second. The plate appeared in Muybridge's 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, and it explains the mechanism that made his sequence photographs possible.
