Few images in this board are as direct about their purpose as this albumen print of a back somersault. Eadweard Muybridge made it in Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, using a row of cameras triggered by tripwires to capture a figure at successive moments of a single movement. The sequence was later published in "The Attitudes of Animals in Motion," where this frame appears as plate 105. Muybridge's work anticipated the motion pictures that would follow within a generation, and the ordered sequence of poses here shows how a body turns through the air in a way the eye cannot follow at full speed.
