Two athletes swing Indian clubs in this sequence, which Muybridge reproduced as plate 108 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*. The series was made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, on the estate of Leland Stanford, who had hired Muybridge to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground. Muybridge used rows of cameras with tripwire shutters to freeze motion in quick succession, and he applied the same method to people, animals and athletic exercises. Viewed together, the frames show how a swinging club moves through the body, which made the set useful to artists and to anyone studying movement.
