Acrobats performing a backward "flip flap" give this plate its energy, with each stage of the tumble laid out in sequence. Muybridge made the photographs at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, using a row of cameras whose shutters were triggered as the performers passed trip wires. The print was copyrighted in 1881 and appeared as plate 109 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, a book that grew out of Leland Stanford's question about whether a trotting horse ever has all four hooves off the ground. Read across the frames, the sequence shows the rotation of the body in a way the eye alone could not follow.
